Adrienne Rozzi Responses: Cauldron

I have used a sketching pencil and drawing pens to create drawings inspired by occult artist Adrienne Rozzi.

I began by sketching the outline of the cauldron then adding the smoke from the top and fire to the bottom. I used the formal elements the same way Rozzi uses in her pieces. Her work is mainly one colour as she screen prints her designs onto cards and fabric. I used quick, brisk strokes using a 0.8 nib pen. To achieve more precision I could use a smaller nib pen which will enable me to define any finer lines.

This drawing took about 30 minutes to complete. To improve I need to put more time into the drawing. The cauldron isn't at all balanced and looks as if it's sat on top of the the fire. The left hand side of the cauldron I feel has been shaded well to create tone to the drawing however the right hand side looks more blunt as I shaded moving my pen vertically.

For my next attempt, I will find a way to create a more proportionate shape for the cauldron and ensure I only use horizontal lines to add tone to the drawing.

I feel this attempt is a good improvment from my first. I used the bottom of a jar to outline the shape of the cauldron so it was symetrical. I also featured some rope detailing on he cauldron as I could use this to add more tone.

Once I sketched out the cauldron shape I added in the flames and outlined them with a fine liner.

At this point I could see the cauldron was going to balance much nicer with the flames.

Using my 0.8 pen I outlined the cauldron and began adding tone around the the sides and around the rope. As I moved further into the middle I applied less pressure then used a 0.3 nib which gave a nice tone transiton into the centre. I added the smoke and filled any gaps around the flames with a pen. This removed any harsh lines from the base of the cauldron.

This is a much improved attempt as I took more time and used my pen only horizontally when shading.
