Fashion Presentation Techniques

Magazines

Magazines are used to promote and communicate fashion ideas.  They are presented in different ways depending on the purpose.  See below some different examples of the way fashion is presented in magazines.

The cover of ASOS magazine is bright and colourful and often has quirky, fun styles featured inside.  This would be because ASOS target market is at the younger age group from 18-25.  This cover features pastel and baby tones making it obvious this is the summer season.

Most models are young to appeal to their target market and they often have a young celebrity on the cover of their magazines such as Taylor Swift to make their audience want to read.

This is a fashion photo shoot from ASOS magazine.  Like the model on the front, she is around the age of ASOS’s target market.  She’s wearing a blue dress shot in a phone box.  The way this photo has been styled conveys she is on a night out having fun.  There is no writing to distract the viewer away from the photo.  I personally like these kinds of photos, where there is little to no writing so you can see the photo clearly.

Vanity Fair’s target market is towards more middle aged women, hence why the cover tends to feature a more mature model, such as Angelina Jolie.  This magazine you have to pay for whereas  ASOS’s is free.  More writing is put on Vanity Fair to intrigue someone to buy.  More article titles are put on the cover so someone browsing the magazine stand in a store may find at least one article which intrigues them to buy. I personally don’t like this style as I think it looks too busy that all the words lose their meaning.

I found this magazine layout online which I really like.  The diamon shapes with catwalk photos create a quircky structure to the page making it look simple, with a lot of interesting imagery.

Instead of focusing on just one trend it features four from that season with a small description giving the viewer a variety.

You can tell by the way this magazine page has been presented it would be for a high end magazine such as Elle rather than a high street as it has that clean, slick look with designer catwalks.

Comparing this layout to the one above, you can tell this would be from a lower end magazine.  This page focuses on one single trend which is simply off the shoulder tops.  The models look casual as if they're walking down the street rather than a catwalk and no consideration to colour, just a mix of different off the shoulder styles.  I personally don't like this layout due to the lack of colour co-ordination.

This trend page is from InStyle magazine.  Similary to the one above, it focuses on just one trend but this one is more versatile as it's lace, which can be worn as dresses, skirts, tops etc.  This layout has more of a colour scheme than the other two and the photos have been styled to look more formal. Circular shapes have been used to create a geometric look on the page.

Pop up shops
A pop up shop is a small shop which retailers will open in a caertain place for a small amount of time.  They are normally presented in a fun way to bring in customers.

Where the Wild things are was a pop up shop in Los Angeles.  The materials they have used convey a theme of nature.  The shop has been structured to a sphere shape using sturdy materials to look like branches.  In the pop up shopthey have rocks and pieces of wood to create mini mountains with snow on top.  The mannequins in the store have hats representing the characters from the children's story book.  The colours stand out and would intrigue passers by to have a look.  The clothing for sale is neatly piled on the table and isn't the main attraction to the shop.  I like this pop up shop as it uses different props to make an exciting experience for the customer.  The clothing isn't overly cluttered and is kept simple and easy on the eye.

This pop up shop I find less exciting than the one above.  Topshop havn't made an exclusive theme or style to their pop up shop.  This could be becasue of its popularity the brand doesn't need to spend out on making the shop more themed.  The clothing has a slight colour co-ordination with possible outfits put on one rail.  However I think compared to the shop above this one looks over cluttered and more like a market stall.

This pop up shop is by Momo in Hong Kong.  The shop has been constructed with a mixture of mirrors and windows.  The different sizes make the shop look like an modern art sculpture of some sort.  The inside of the shop is small but tall with T-shirts hanging down from the ceiling and on the walls.  I like the idea of hanging clothing on the walls instead of just using mannequin's and is a tecnique I'll consider for my own exhibition.
